Surprise

Consider the many elements of Surprise, a city that defines southwestern living. Sparkling new homes. Clean, safe neighborhoods. Bustling retail centers and wide open city parks.

Surprise's Secrets Revealed

  • Catch a game at award winning Surprise Stadium, spring training home to the Kansas City Royals and Texas Rangers. You’ll love the great sightlines, food court, warm sun and friendly atmosphere.
  • Do the tennis thing at the 25-court Tennis and Racquet Center, which features 17 lighted courts open to everyone. Catch the pros during great tournaments like the CTCA Outback Classic in our 2500-seat center court. How’s your game? The courts are open and instruction is available.
  • Enjoy an adventurous hike in the pristine desert of the White Tank Mountains, where you can puzzle over ancient petroglyphs and visit a seasonal waterfall at trail’s end.
  • Be stunned by sophisticated ancient and modern art at the Heard Museum West and the West Valley Art Museum, two Surprise cultural jewels.

In this busy world, we invite you to Surprise where you can connect the many pieces of your life and re-energize.

Come see the pros at the Surprise Tennis and Racquet Complex, host-site for the Cancer Treatment Centers of America Tennis Championships and the Fed Cup! Or sign up for lessons and play on the courts where Andre Agassi, John McEnroe and other tennis legends have played. Our tennis complex has 25 courts, seven lit for night play, so there are year-round opportunities for the tennis greats and novices alike.

Or settle back and enjoy the warm winter sun at the award-winning Surprise Stadium, the Spring Training home to the Texas Rangers and Kansas City Royals. You’ll love the great sightlines and extensive food court. This venue also hosts a variety of baseball leagues, family Movie Night events; high school sports; and other community events that carry on throughout the year.

And if you enjoy playing games, our Community and Recreation Services Department offers a variety of sports programs for all ages!  The city’s many parks offer open space for families to come together in fun and play. And the city’s DreamCatcher Park offers adaptive recreation opportunities so all children can enjoy wonderful outdoor activities.

In Surprise, it is easier than ever to connect to your government. The new four-story City Hall, opened June 2009, represents an immediate point of pride for our community and offers a significant improvement in the effectiveness and efficiency of municipal government. Inside the 136,000-square-foot structure, residents have easy first-floor access to the Development Center – a one-stop shop for permits and other important documents; City Clerk’s Office; Cashier station; and City Store – offering exclusive merchandise emblazoned with the city’s official logo.

Our new Council Chambers feature comfortable, theater-style seating for up to 170 people, with an accessible podium from which residents can address the council and where staff presentations are made. Two 160-inch screens clearly show presentations and also feature the council voting results. Wall-mounted, remotely operated cameras are used for Surprise 11 TV coverage of city council and Planning and Zoning Commission meetings. A Wi-Fi service is also available in the chambers.

Perhaps you’re ready to learn a new skill or finish your degree at the innovative Communiversity @ Surprise offering two-year, four-year, Masters and Ph.D. level courses. Located across the courtyard from City Hall, the Communiversity offers more than 40 educational programs from three community colleges and three universities. Classes are taught in a variety of formats, including in-person, online and hybrid. Job training options are also possible at the Communiversity, perfect for entrepreneurs looking to join the more than 240 new businesses that have opened here since the first half of 2009.

Celebrate the majestic White Tank Mountains via a hike, bike or camping affair. You’ll be amazed at the ancient petroglyphs found throughout the regional park and be inspired by the amazing desert vistas below the mountains’ peaks.

You’ll feel right at home in our distinctive, clean and safe neighborhoods and you’ll discover your compassionate side in a community where neighbors help neighbors. You’ll find the shopping and restaurant choices are vast and varied so no need to travel elsewhere.

And rest assured that our General Plan has the city on track to grow responsibly in the future. Growth plans are in place to respect our spectacular desert environment and conserve precious resources, while integrating transportation, jobs and educational excellence.
